BIM Show Live spoke with WYG ahead of the BIM Awards 2018 on the award entry and what makes Caolain a potentially award-winning nominee.
Caolain has been instrumental in bridging the gap between information management and project management within WYG and my project Southern Regional College (SRC). He tied together data drops, information exchanges with existing project management toolkits such as project programmes and information release schedules. He has been the glue between the project team, the lead designer and the information manager that has made this process so successful.
On SRC he empowered the team to develop their BIM capabilities and the opportunities to implement innovative processes. Before the government mandate of BIM Level 2, he took the lead as WYG Project Manager to achieve BIM Level 2 Excellence on SRC project. Caolain co-wrote the design teams BIM Execution Plan (BEP) which outlined the protocols and procedures in accordance with the BIM Protocol. This project was unique as WYG also assisted the Employer in drafting their Employer Information Requirements (EIR) post appointment bringing our expertise, lessons learnt and experience in finalising this collaboratively.
Caolain championed the ethos of BIM and adopting a truly collaborative approach across the client and design team from the outset. Models were uploaded bi-weekly with the client given full permissions to view live data and provide feedback throughout the design process and not just at stage complete data drops which led to more efficient design buy-in and efficiency with stage approvals.
He also developed and instigated a standardised reporting protocol which automatically produces reporting data summarised in a dashboard showing real-time data within the Common Data Environment.
Caolain co-founded and formed the BIM Community task group BIM4PM (BIM for Project Managers) in February 2017. He strives to raise awareness and to support Project Managers with their understanding, knowledge and delivery of BIM throughout the UK and Ireland via twitter and holding seminars and workshops. Caolain is also a member of UK BIM Alliance.
The SRC Exemplar BIM Level 2 project he led has already been acknowledged and was presented to industry peers at the Northern Ireland BIM Conference on 25th November 2016 and featured in BIM+ magazine as a case study.
