BIM Show Live spoke with Ambrosio Gomez ahead of the BIM Awards 2018 on their award entry and what makes this a potentially award-winning project.
As specialists in sports architecture, our use of BIM for stadia is world-class. This capability can be evidenced in our technical design work for a high-profile stadia project in the middle east. We have also implemented BIM in the design for Ashgabat’s National Stadium, created for the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games 2017.
Ensuring stadiums are compliant with rigorous FIFA, UEFA and IOC Regulations can potentially add weeks onto design time and incur substantial costs. Our in-house BIM capability has significantly streamlined this process. We have developed a method of linking Revit to Excel that allows for instantaneous cross-referencing of brief requirements and relevant legislation. These compliancy lists usually run hundreds of rows long and can be complex to navigate and reference against the model. Now, both clients and the design team can refer to any database to review compliance in an easily-accessible format. This has been critical for effective design sign off.
We have also been able to fully-automate and optimise the number of functional spaces within a project. By providing a total size of a given space in an arena or stadium and running it through our unique Dynamo script, we can map out of hundreds of compliant rooms.
We use Navisworks to allow clients to view the model from any spectator’s seat. Not only does this give a highly-accurate view of the completed stadium, but when combined with an automatic script created by our in-house specialists, allows clients to view potential partial or complete sightline obstructions from each seat. In this way, the client is given full autonomy to agree to design changes and optimise seat numbers within a space. This BIM offering is unique to AFL.
Also unique and highly valuable to clients is the ability to provide a coloured 3D map of the c-values for all spectators, thereby allowing the client to assign seat pricing depending on quality of sightlines. Additionally, we can provide the client with design options of where FIFA compliant giant TVs can be placed without affecting sightlines.
AFL Architects’ vast experience demonstrates the potential for the UK to be at the forefront of worldwide BIM integration. As a direct result of our BIM R&D investment, we are procuring larger, more complex and higher-profile projects across the world, saving thousands of man-hours and millions of pounds for our clients and contractors.
