A journey to becoming extraordinary often requires you to challenge tradition and dare to do things differently

I want to drive permanent and lasting change in the construction industry
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been passionate about technology and construction. As soon as I started working, I began to learn that the two are intrinsically linked in the world today – and what binds them is change.
At BIM Show Live I want to tell you a little more about where my passion began and how I used this to grow a career in the construction industry.
My career began in architecture and design, taking me into construction and most recently software development. As I’ve picked my way through this complex industry, I’ve learnt to seek out change and instigate it where it is absent. I’m always driven to ask questions and figure out why things are the way are – and when the answer is ‘because they’ve always been that way’, I started to ask more questions. I’ve been lucky to work at some great companies and that drives my enthusiasm and a passionate belief that this generation will enable our industry to achieve great things.
I bring this experience and enthusiasm for technology driven construction to my role today, and enjoy working directly with our business and our customers to provide tools that deliver outcomes. Whether that be technology implementation, business consulting or organisational change management, I believe in the importance of challenging businesses on the day-to-day – is this really working to your best advantage, could implementing change allow them to work smarter, more effectively, reduce costs and increase output? I believe it can.
James Austin, Construction Industry Strategist for Autodesk and co-founder of BIM Show Live, is to deliver a Keynote address on Day 1, Wednesday 27 February at 14:45.
